It inhibits the activity of acetolactate synthase (ALS) in weeds, blocking the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids and causing growth to cease and death. It is highly effective against broadleaf weeds and Cyperus rotundus in cotton and sugarcane fields. It is also used in warm-season lawns to control broadleaf grass and Cyperaceae weeds, but its efficacy against gramineous weeds is relatively weak
